History
The practice started in 1981, as Prior Manton Tuke Partnership, although we were effectively the continuation of a previous practice in which John Prior had been a partner at that time. We had three partners, John Prior, a quantity surveyor, and two architects, Peter Manton and Peter Tuke.
The new practice continued most of the workload of the former practice, which at the time was largely for Housing Associations. In particular, the work included a number of projects for Look Ahead Housing and Care (then known as Beacon Hostels), a relationship that has continued to the present day.
In 1981 our office was in Rathbone Place, in the West End of London. As the company diversified into retail and private healthcare projects a decision was made to relocate the office. In 1989 we moved to Prescott Place in Clapham, firstly to No.15, then across the road to out present address at No.20.
In the mid 1990’s we acquired the practice of Brian Powell, who joined us as a consultant, and we changed our name to Prior Manton Tuke Powell. We started work on our first mental health projects at about the same time, both for NHS Trusts (as they became) and the private sector.
In 2005 Roger Crundwell joined us as a partner, and at the same time we changed our name and status to Tuke Manton Architects LLP. Sadly, the practice witnessed the sudden and unexpected death of two founding partners, Peter Manton in 2006 and Peter Tuke in 2008. However, John Prior and Roger Crundwell have continued the long-standing reputation of Tuke Manton Architects for the professionalism of its approach, the quality, and distinctiveness of its design, and the scope of its services.
Throughout the life of the practice Tuke Manton Architects has grown with the support of skilled architects, technicians and support staff. Everyone at Tuke Manton contributes to the continued success and continues to support the vision of the practice.
Prior Manton Tuke Powell had 25 years of success and developed an impressive reputation with its clients and we have John Prior, Peter Tuke and Peter Manton to thank for their hard work and dedication to the practice. We have been successful in maintaining client relationships and repeat business and Tuke Manton Architects LLP has been tasked with building on its reputation to allow the next generation to build on this success and take the practice into the 21st Century. Tuke Manton will grow as a business both financially and in the quality of its architecture.
