Our involvement in acute healthcare dates back to 1986, and we have been working with the largest UK private provider, BMI Healthcare, since 1994.

Completed projects include Princess Grace Hospital, London (£5.1m); Portland Hospital for Women and Children, London (£3.8m); King’s Oak Hospital, Enfield (£2.7m); Hampshire Clinic, Basingstoke (£4.7m); Clementine Churchill Hospital, Harrow (£11.8m); Winchester House Medical Centre, Blackheath (£2.2m).

Projects currently at preliminary stages, with or awaiting planning consent, include Princess Margaret Hospital, Windsor; Bishop’s Wood Hospital, Northwood; Shirley Oaks Hospital, Croydon; Somerfield Hospital, Maidstone; Saxon Clinic, Milton Keynes; and a new-build hospital in Ashford, Kent. We are also involved in feasibility work for, among others, Mount Alvernia Hospital, Guildford and Sloane Hospital, Beckenham.

In the public sector, design work has been completed for Diagnostic and Treatment Centres for Frimley Park NHS Trust, Camberley; Mayday Healthcare NHS Trust, Croydon; Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, Stanmore and Halton General Hospital NHS Trust, Runcorn.

Mental healthcare

Our work includes projects for leading private providers and NHS Mental Health Trusts.

Completed projects include brain injury units at Ardleigh, Essex and Grafton Regis, Northamptonshire; a new-build EMI unit in New Malden; refurbishment of acute mental health wards at Gordon Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital in London, and St Bernard’s Hospital, Ealing.

Projects currently in design include a £21.0m medium/enhanced medium secure unit for 60 women for West London Mental Health NHS Trust, situated on an historic brownfield site at St Bernard’s Hospital, Ealing.

Feasibility studies undertaken or in hand include Estate Strategies for Central and North West London Mental Health NHS Trust and West London Mental Health NHS Trust, and full business case design for three sites for C+NWL Mental Health NHS Trust.

Education

Education is a developing sector for the practice. In the schools sector, we are at the preliminary stage of projects to extend a number of existing primary schools and are awaiting instruction on completed feasibility work for others.

Work has been completed at Singlewell Primary School and Oak Trees Community School, Maidstone, in conjunction with Faber Maunsell and Kent County Council. Following the successful completion of an IT and library project for Oak Trees, we won a limited competition for extending their seven classrooms and construction work on this phase is currently underway.

Community and supported housing

The practice has a long-standing involvement in the residential and housing sector, particularly in community and supported schemes. Over the years we have worked for various local authorities and leading privately-funded organisations.

Since the start of the practice in 1981, we have produced over £26m worth of houses, flats and hostel accommodation for single people, young people requiring support, homeless people, and people with mental health or learning problems and other special needs. This includes the recently completed apartments for vulnerable young people at Rainforest Walk, Bracknell (£2.3m) for Look Ahead Housing and Care.

Other recently completed schemes include: Loughborough Community Centre, Brixton (£4.3m) for Metropolitan Housing Trust, comprising flats to rent, shared-ownership flats and a new community centre; and Logos House, Bristol (£3.6m) for the Salvation Army Housing Association, comprising a new 24-bed extension, 69 remodelled bedrooms with en-suite facilities, and a unit providing alcohol and substance abuse programmes.

Schemes currently at the preliminary stage or awaiting planning consent include affordable housing at Chatham Street, Reading (£4.6m) for Catalyst Housing Group.

Housing for older people

The practice has a good record of designing for older people, with its first sheltered housing scheme being completed in 1987 as part of an integrated development providing homes for 200 people.

This was followed by further projects for the ‘frail elderly’ (a category newly-established by the Housing Corporation) in the late eighties, leading to work for the Abbeyfield Society in the nineties, including a new Elderly Mentally Infirm unit in New Malden completed in 1999.

In 2002, we were appointed to carry out a feasibility study for the re-provision of residential care facilities in Croydon. Other projects were commissioned by specialist providers such as Quantum Care.

In 2003, we were short-listed in a competition for the replacement of the Infirmary on the Royal Hospital Chelsea site, alongside the work of Wren, Adam and Soane.

Project Management

As the ever changing construction market evolves and our Project Management services encompass the delivery throughout the life span of the project. Providing a single point of contact between the client and the vast array of multi disciplinary professional services involved in the life cycle of the project, the Project Manager ensures continuity from initial design brief through early stage development, detailed design, procurement of contractors, and construction stage delivery to completion, handover and commissioning of the completed project.

Our Project Manager maintains control of budget and programme from the outset: architectural design is coordinated with mechanical, electrical, structural, acoustic and fire safety design, delivered by the multidisciplinary team and tracks progress to ensure the client has complete reassurance that the project is being delivered as intended and cost effectively.

Planning issues, building regulations, variations to design are all continually managed, monitored and controlled with regular reporting between the project team and the client: providing the client with confidence in project delivery without the need to spend excessive time ‘micro managing’ all involved.

Restoration and conservation

Tuke Manton has experience in restoration and conservation work covering a wide range of building types and classification, including Ancient Monuments and Grade I, Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings.

We pride ourselves in being able to bring new life to these old and historic buildings by providing practical solutions, while meticulously preserving the architectural integrity of the structure and the vital place it occupies as part of our cultural heritage.

We have received awards for our work in this area, including a Civic Trust Commendation for the refurbishment of medieval timber-framed buildings in Waltham Abbey, and an award for the discovery and restoration of a medieval timber-framed merchant’s house in Stratford-on-Avon, which led to its subsequent listing on completion.

The practice has been appointed as architect for a long-term project for the maintenance, repair and extension of the Watermen’s Hall in the City of London, belonging to the Company of Watermen and Lightermen of the River Thames. Constructed in the late 1770’s, the Hall is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and represents one of the few surviving examples of a Georgian city company hall.
